15 Common Cleaning Mistakes That People Commit

If you want most impressive cleaning results, hiring professionals for deep cleaning services is the solution. Sil All Services Northampton is ready to come for a wide range of deep cleaning services: end of tenancy cleaning, after builders cleaning, after party cleaning, move-in/out cleaning, one-off cleans, spring cleaning, etc. While doing their jobs, our cleaners often notice scratched floors, damaged furniture, and deteriorated rugs—all effects of incorrect cleaning.

We are confident that you are trying your best to stay on top of cleaning with regular housekeeping. However, dedication isn’t enough to obtain the best cleaning results. Our professionals share the most common mistakes that people make when cleaning their homes. Avoiding these mistakes is a good starting point for having a nicely cleaned house without ruining anything in the process.

1. Cleaning too quickly

Truth be told, many people don’t really like cleaning, which explains why they rush the cleaning process. At Sil All Services Northampton, our cleaners spend as many hours as necessary to complete the job, and we advise you to do the same.

When we don't speed the cleaning process, we get to do things better, and cleaning won't be necessary as often as when cleaning very quickly. If we rush, we might miss a spot, fail on cleaning the property, and end up moving dirt around the house.

Take your time and pay attention to most minute detail when cleaning. Being meticulous and not forgetting some things is also crucial.

2. Not reading instructions

Many of us have been cleaning for many years, so we know pretty much everything about cleaning products, right? Sadly, that’s not always true. As a matter of fact, you might be shocked when reading the labels of one of the cleaners you use every single day and find out you’re doing it all wrong.

People in the cleaning industry spend a lot of time, money, and energy to develop products for the best cleaning results. While developing the products, they have also discovered the best methods to use the product—as you can see on directions on labels. The variety of cleaning products is impressive: some need more time to work than others, some work only on certain surfaces, etc. If you aim to get the best out of your cleaning product, you should begin by reading the directions on your cleaning product.

3. Spraying products directly on surfaces

It makes perfect sense that you spray the cleaning product directly on your surface and wipe it away afterwards. The method is efficient for some surfaces, but it’s not the most effective or safest way to clean.

If you’re cleaning a delicate surface, you have to spray the cleaning product onto a microfiber cloth, wipe the surface, and remove excess liquid with another dry cloth. Porcelain, soft surfaces (vinyl, car seats), wood, and electronic screens (TV, phone, and laptop) are surfaces to use this cleaning technique. You will use less product and clean the surface without damaging it.

4. Scrubbing stains on upholstery and carpets

Under any circumstances, you should never scrub spills and stains on your furnishings and rugs! When scrubbing, you only push the dirt deeper into the fibres and make it more difficult to remove. If your upholstery/carpets have stains, you should gently blot the stains and squeeze the sponge so that the contaminant doesn’t get onto the fabric upholstery or carpet.

5. Using stain removal for clothes on your carpets

At Sil All Services Northampton, our cleaners select the methods and products most suited for your carpets and upholstery. Using a stain removal product made for clothes on furnishings and carpets is another common mistake. These cleaning products are made to work quickly and to be washed out. When you use such products on your carpets/upholstery fabrics, the active ingredients will be too strong and damage the fibres. Additionally, your carpets and upholstery will have a much shorter lifespan.

6. Mixing ammonia and bleach

Some people think that the key to the best cleaning results is to mix two strong cleaners. Even though that's not entirely false, in some cases, the mixing is incredibly dangerous. Ammonia and bleach make such a combination that generates highly toxic gases. The vapours are hazardous and potentially lethal.

To avoid accidents, you should always read the cleaning product labels and avoid mixing when you’re not 100% sure it’s safe. Making your cleaners or using only certified green cleaning products are other options too.

7. Washing windows on a sunny day

As awkward as it may sound, you should never clean windows on a beautiful sunny day. We know it’s counterintuitive because why not clean windows in perfectly sunny weather? What you miss is that the sun will heat your windows and cleaning product and cause unsightly streaks. It’s better to wait for an overcast day and clean your windows to perfection. You will be able to admire the streak-free windows on a sunny day!

8. Using vinegar on natural stone

One ingredient you almost always find in DIY cleaning recipes is vinegar, as it's such a powerful cleaning agent. Even if vinegar is eco-friendly and safe for humans, it’s still an acid. When you use it on marble and granite floors, it will simply eat through the stone.

9. Cleaning in a buffing motion

Don’t clean in a circular buffing motion. Even if the technique is effective for buffing a surface, you only move the dirt from one area to the next if you're using it when cleaning. Instead, you should clean in an “s" pattern (left to right and moving slowly down the surface); you will remove dirt and clean the surface.

10.  Not using carpet attachment on vacuuming a carpet

Regardless of what you think, using a powerful vacuum cleaner isn’t enough to clean a rug. You also need to use the correct vacuum head so that you don’t end up with threadbare sections underfoot. Moreover, if you don’t use the carpet attachment, you damage the carpet or rug.

11.  Letting water sit on hardwood floors

One of the most common mistakes when cleaning hardwood floors is to bust out the mop. When you use too much water on your wood floors, the risk of warping is significant. You should use a lightly dampened mop for best cleaning results without damaging the hardwood floors and not a sopping wet one. Also, go over with a dry cloth to remove any standing water after cleaning the floors.

12.  Cleaning stovetops with metal scouring pads.

Even if the stovetop is strong enough to take high heat, it won’t take a steel wool scrub. Steel wood and scouring pads will damage and scratch enamel or glass cooktops. Do due diligence about how to clean such stovetops without damaging them.

13.  Using bleach on rust stains.

Just because bleach is excellent at removing stains from most things, it will be ineffective and damaging on rust. Since bleach works via oxidation, it will feed the rust to get any results with it. Instead, you should use other methods and products to get rid of rust.

14.  Using lye to clear drains

The metal hydroxide lye can clear the drains, but only if they’re not made of PVC. If so, you will only damage the pipes. The drain cleaning process generates heat that softens and melts the PVC pipes. Stay on the safe side, and always make sure that you're using a cleaning product that is made especially for your plumbing system.

15.  Cleaning pet stains with an ammonia-based cleaner

Living with pets is both lovely and challenging, especially when having to remove pet hair from all surfaces. There are many methods to get rid of pet hair, and using ammonia-based cleaners isn’t one of them. Since ammonia is present in cat urine, your cat could mistake the cleaning solution for another cat marking its territory. As a result, your furry friend might mark the same spot again right after you’ve cleaned it.

Extra tip

Magic erasers are great but won’t work on all surfaces in your home. If you use it on shiny surfaces, you will obtain dull spots. Therefore, you should never use a magic eraser on reflective surfaces such as countertops, wood floors, microwave exteriors, and any other area with a semi-gloss finish.
