Many of us don’t realize, but we spend a third of our lives sleeping. Having said that, it makes perfect sense that we care a lot about our comfort in bed for a good night's sleep. From installing light-blocking shades to using the most comfortable mattress for our sleep position, there are so many things we need to do to create the conditions for a restful night.
We often search high and low to find the best mattress for our body and sleep position. Once we find it, we try our best to extend its lifespan in whichever way we can. Sil All Services Northampton takes on various deep cleaning services (end of tenancy, spring cleaning, after builders cleaning, one-off cleans, etc.) and includes deep mattress cleaning on our checklists. Our cleaners are excellent, experienced, and know which products, methods, and tools to use to clean your mattresses thoroughly. We recommend you hire professionals from time to time, to remove all dust, dirt, dust mites, and bed bugs from your mattresses. However, there are many things that you can do to make your mattress last longer. Our professionals at Sil All Services have several suggestions for you.
1. Use a mattress protector
When you buy a mattress, make time and also get a mattress protector. No matter how careful you are with the bed, it’s only a matter of time until spills and other accidents will occur. We recommend you buy a waterproof cover so that nothing spills into your mattress.
It's not only the accidental spills and liquids that can ruin your mattress; bodily oils and skin flakes can also travel through your sheets and into the bed. Always measure the mattress and height profile before purchasing a mattress protector. You want it to fit snugly on your mattress and not move underneath the sheets. Fitted and encased mattress protectors make the most common types.
Fitted
A fitted mattress protector matches the bed the same way a fitted sheet does. These covers are easy to procure and have affordable prices. They feature a mattress pad top and can be waterproof.
Encased
These covers encase and protect the whole mattress as they cover all six sides of the bed. Many models come with zippers up the sides.
Keep in mind that using a mattress protector can also reduce the risk of voiding the mattress’ warranty. It’s common for manufacturers to void the warranty in cases of stains with liquids and fluids.

2. No bouncing whatsoever
Bouncing almost always damages the mattress, as it puts unnecessary pressure on it. Jumping up and down can damage the box spring underneath the mattress or the bed frame, which isn’t made to withstand such pressure.
3. Ensure correct support for the mattress
Providing the best support for your mattress is essential for your sleep quality and the lifespan of your bed as well. It doesn’t mean that you should buy a foundation or a box spring; a solid platform is enough for even wearing of your mattress.
We highlight that some manufacturers may void the warranty in case of inadequate mattress support. You need a box spring for an innerspring mattress and a solid platform for one made with memory foam.

4. Rotate/flip the mattress from time to time
For many years, clients had to rotate and flip their mattresses to keep them in good condition. When you sleep in the same spot over and over again, you cause particular wear and tear in one section of the mattress. However, some new generation mattresses are made with customized layers and don’t need rotating or flipping. Many models only need a rotation from time to time.
A reliable manufacturer provides instruction on rotating/flipping the mattress. Typically, we recommend rotating mattresses made of latex foam/memory foam/innerspring/hybrid every couple of months. Keep in mind to turn the bed 180 degrees when the season changes. Some mattresses don’t require any rotating, nevertheless.
5. Vacuum the mattress
Make time and vacuum your mattress at least twice a year so that you reduce the risk of buildup of dust mites, sweat, allergens. You should vacuum it when you rotate it at the end of a season.
Permanently remove the linens before you vacuum the mattress and use the upholstery attachment for it. Pay attention to the seams, where most buildup will form.
6. Air the mattress
Even if it might be tricky to air the mattress every single day, we recommend you do it as often as possible. Remove the pillows and duvet and leave your bed to air for 20 minutes. It’s an efficient method to help the body moisture from last night dissipate.
7. Manage and spot clean stains right away
No matter how careful you are, accidents and stains will still happen. Please don’t leave them to dry, but vacuum and spot clean them right away. Use some lemon juice and salt and make a coarse paste. Rub it carefully into the stain and let it work for 30 to 60 minutes. Use a clean towel to wipe it off. If the mattress is darkly coloured, don’t use lemon as it’s going to bleach it.
You can also make a mix out of baking soda, liquid dish soap, water, and a couple of drops of hydrogen peroxide. Spray it on the stain and blot it with a clean cloth.
8. Sanitize with steam cleaning
The cleaners at Sil All Services Northampton have specific methods to deep clean your mattress. You can obtain good results with a steam cleaner. Run it onto the surface of your bed for a quick and efficient way to disinfect it. You don't need to add any cleaners because the heated water is enough to remove dust mites and microbes in your mattress.
9. No eating in bed
Even if you think that eating some chips won’t damage your mattress, the tiny crumbs are very appealing to bugs and small critters, ants and cockroaches especially. When eating in bed is a habit you cannot get rid of, you should at least change the sheets frequently, such as every three days.
10. Deodorize the mattress
Any now and then, you can give your mattress a fresh smell by sprinkling some baking soda over the whole surface. The one-pound box will be enough when deodorizing the bed for the first time. Ideally, you should let the baking soda sit in for 24 hours. Plan this step for when you’re away on a trip. To enhance the sanitizing results, you should also place the mattress near a sunny window.
11. Keep pets away from your bed
Many pet owners are tempted to let their furry friends snuggle in. However, as they do it, germs, bacteria, and bacteria will travel in their mattresses as well.
Parasites such as hookworms and roundworms are common in dogs and cats. They lay eggs in the pet’s hair and from there right onto the sheets. Needless to say, nothing good will ever come out of that.
12. No bed bugs in either
Bed bugs are flat and tiny bugs that can hide in any bedding, mattresses, and bed frames included. They feed on blood and are active at night. You never want bed bugs in your bed or anywhere near it. There are many ways to prevent bed bugs in your bed, and three are crucial:
- Use an encasement mattress protector—it works like a bed bug barrier. Some models are sealed, so bed bugs can't go through.
- Keep your bedroom organized and cleaned so that bed bugs don’t have many places to hide. Our professionals at Sil All Services Northampton can come for deep cleaning of your mattress, bedroom, and house whenever you want. We cover many forms of deep cleaning services in Northampton: end of tenancy cleaning, one-off cleans, spring cleaning, after builders cleaning, etc.
- Try not to buy second-hand furniture since the risk of being infected with bed bugs is significant.
