Best Ways to Remove limescale from your toilet—until professionals come

Whether big or small, fancy or simple your household is, you need to keep it clean and hygienic for your comfort, health, and wellbeing. From washing the windows to wiping the bannisters and disinfecting the toilet, there are so many chores you need to complete to make sure your home is always welcoming and hygienic.

If we can skip some cleaning chores from regular housekeeping, others are mandatory every week. Cleaning the toilet is, for sure, one of our weekly cleaning tasks, for reasons we don't need to detail. However, hard water in our house can cause limescale, which needs particular attention and methods for removal. When you hire professionals for deep cleaning services, limescale removal is on their checklists. At Sil All Services Northampton, our cleaners leave all toilets, taps, sinks, bathtubs, etc., limescale free. Our technicians use the best cleaning products, methods, and tools to make your toilet sparklingly clean.

However, until you hire professionals for one-off cleans, deep cleaning, after builders cleaning, move-in/out cleaning, etc., you should try solving the limescale problem on your own. Our cleaners provide you with the most efficient tips for removing limescale from your toilet. These tricks can work wonders!

First of all, what is limescale?

Calcium carbonate, also known as limescale, is caused by water passing through soft rocks, limestone, and chalk. Rainwater goes through the soft rocks, collects minerals inside, and turns into "hard water" after some time. Even if the UK water has to go through several filtration systems, the minerals will still pass. Therefore, “hard water” travels through pipes and deposits limescale in our appliances, taps, and toilets.

Limescale buildups are the powdery white substances that form on showerheads, taps, mirrors, walls, toilets—any surface within splashing distance of the sink/. Brown, orange, pink stains inside your toilet bowl are, in fact, limescale.

Is it necessary to remove limescale?

The main reason for removing limescale it's the unesthetic appearance. Limescale looks unsightly and unhygienic, especially if the toilet bowl is heavily stained. However, the sight of limescale is a minor problem when we take a look at the bigger picture, the plumbing. The buildup will slowly block the water flow in the taps, pipes, kitchen appliances, showerheads, toilet, and dishwashers as limescale deposits. A restricted water flow reduces the efficiency of your washing machine, dishwasher, etc. The bathroom will no longer flush correctly, and everything water-related in your home will start to develop functioning problems.

Does limescale affect the toilet?

Hard water isn’t dangerous, per se. After all, it’s just water that has dissolved calcium carbonate that leaves minerals behind when going through your appliances. In time, the mineral builds up and turns into a complex and thick crust that is difficult to remove with standard cleaning methods. Sil All Services Northampton cleaners use the best cleaning products, techniques, and supplies to deep clean your toilets, sinks, taps, etc., and leave them lime scale-free.

When not managed, limescale can discolour the toilet and leave flaky areas around the seat.

How not to remove limescale?

As with everything else in life, there are so many myths on how to remove limescale. Even if the misconceptions about removing limescale are many, we only present you the most common of them.

Coca-cola

Some people believe that you can destroy and remove limescale in the toilet by pouring a bottle of the famous soda and leaving it overnight. The acid in the cola will supposedly eliminate the limescale. We obtained nothing but cola-coloured limescale stain, so we’re not convinced that it works.

Bleach

We all use bleach for cleaning many things inside our houses, but we don’t recommend you use it against limescale. Bleach is incredible to brighten darkened surfaces, remove difficult stains, disinfect, and kill almost everything. However, it won't be able to remove limescale. Truth be told, bleach will brighten the discolouration. Additionally, it makes the limescale even more damaging because you can no longer see it and not know how it damages the toilet.

What are the most effective ways to remove limescale from the toilet?

Sometimes, you don't need to rush to a store to get expensive cleaning products. Vinegar, sandpaper, and pumice stone are some of the most common products you can use to get rid of limescale from the toilet.

White vinegar

Pour 1 litre of undiluted white vinegar into the toilet bowl. Pay attention when pouring because you have to get all sides of the toilet bowl. Let the vinegar work for at least three hours. Afterwards, use a toilet brush/scrubbing sponge to scrub the toilet bowl. It would help if you flushed the toilet to remove all residue. It might take a while, but you will have a limescale free toilet at the end of it.

Pumice stone

If you want to use the pumice stone, you should make sure that both the toilet bowl and the pumice stone are wet. Otherwise, you will end up scratching the porcelain on the bowl. Have water within reach and wet the stone from time to time. Rub the limescale with the stone and wash it away. If you have just bought the toilet, don't use the pumice stone because you could void the guarantee.

Baking soda and vinegar

Baking soda and white vinegar are some of the most amazing ingredients to have in your household at any given moment. Pour one cup of white vinegar into your toilet bowl and one cup of baking soda. Let them work for 10 minutes. Please put on gloves and eye protection.

You have to guide the brush around so that you cover all limescale before letting the mixture work for another 25 minutes. The cleaning method eliminates limescale, even if it's challenging to reach the U bend.

Lemon juice

You can also combine lemon juice with white vinegar to make the limescale disappear from your toilet bowl. It’s a natural cleaning agent, and both the lemon juice and the white vinegar are eco-friendlier than other cleaning solutions found in stores. The acid in the lemon juice is strong, and you need to leave the mixture soak for an hour. The cleaning solution will break the limescale down, and you can come to scrub it away afterwards.

Sandpaper

For this cleaning method, you should use medium-grain and fine-grain sandpaper. Use the medium-grain sandpaper to scrub the inside the toilet. You have to be meticulous and clean until most lime scale is gone. Please don’t put too much pressure when scrubbing because you will scratch the bowl. Continue with buffing the inside of the toilet with fine-grain paper. As long as you have patience, you should be able to remove the limescale altogether.

Don’t forget to flush the toilet so that you eliminate all residues.

Can you prevent limescale in the toilet?

It goes without saying that preventing the limescale from building in your toilet bowl is a lot more effortlessly than removing it. Since it’s the mineral content of the water supply causing the limescale buildup, it isn't easy to prevent limescale buildups. You can try some methods to remove the limescale until it turns into a severe problem to manage.

Lemon/vinegar

Be consistent and add some lemon juice or white vinegar to the toilet once a month. This step reduces the risk of limescale buildup. The lemon juice's acidity and the white vinegar will break down and remove tiny limescale deposits. Plus, you don’t need to do any scrubbing.

Water Softeners

This method is relatively expensive, but it takes the limescale problem out of your hands for a long time. A water softener will eliminate the mineral in the hard water supply, so you will no longer have limescale problems in your toilet or any other appliances and pipes in your home.
